As the Head: IT Technology Commercialization, your role is to lead the commercialization of IT and digital innovation by transforming technology capabilities, data assets and intellectual property into sustainable business value for Rand Mutual Assurance. Your role is responsible for bridging the gap between technology development and market application, enabling the organisation to deliver innovative, customer-centric solutions that enhance operational efficiency, generate new revenue streams and support the evolution of social insurance services.

This includes driving strategic partnerships, developing commercially viable digital products, ensuring regulatory compliance and embedding a culture of innovation that aligns with the organisation’s mission to deliver accessible and impactful insurance solutions in South Africa.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Strategic IT Leadership

• Define and drive the IT commercialization and digital transformation strategy aligned with organisational goals


• Identify, prioritise, and realise business value from technology investments.

Technology & Product Commercialisation

• Lead end-to-end commercialization of IT solutions, platforms, and data assets


• Translate innovation, research, and development outputs into scalable, market-ready products and services.

Innovation Management & Culture

• Establish and manage innovation pipelines, including ideation, prototyping and implementation


• Drive a culture of continuous innovation across the organisation.

Digital Solution Delivery & Operational Transformation

• Oversee the design, development, and deployment of customer-centric digital insurance solutions


• Digitize and automate core processes to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.

Partnerships & Ecosystem Development

• Build and manage relationships with technology partners, startups, and research institutions


• Lead collaboration initiatives to co-develop and commercialize new solutions.

Governance, Risk & Value Realisation

• Ensure regulatory compliance, data protection, and risk management in all commercialization activities


• Develop commercial models, track ROI, and demonstrate measurable business impact.

Requirements:

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE TABLE

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field


• Postgraduate qualification


• MBA, MCom, or Master’s in Technology Management/Innovation) – preferred


• Relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2, Innovation/Technology Commercialization)


• 5 or more years in IT commercialization, digital innovation, or technology management


• Proven track record in digital product development and commercialization


• Experience in insurance, financial services, or social sector environments.

Demonstrated experience in:

• Technology partnerships and ecosystem development


• Intellectual property (IP) management or licensing


• Operational transformation through digitization and automation


• Strong understanding of South African regulatory frameworks (POPIA, FICA, insurance regulations).

Knowledge & Skills:

• IT commercialization and technology-to-market strategies


• Digital product development and platform thinking


• Insurance operations (claims, underwriting, policy administration)


• Data governance, analytics, and AI-driven insights
