The Weekend Editor oversees News24's news and opinion offering on weekends. The ideal candidate has excellent judgment to curate a high-quality selection of top stories for weekend reading.

Duties and responsibilities

• Liaise with section editors from Tuesday to Saturday to compile a high-quality weekend offering of top stories from news, investigations, politics, business, sport and lifestyle.
• Commission, edit and publish well-written, persuasive opinion pieces and analyses from a broad range of views.
• Edit and rewrite copy to suit weekend reading patterns and habits.
• Work with the production team to design and prepare the News24 weekend offering in vivid, appealing formats.
• Liaise with the engagement and video teams to prepare social media and multimedia content for weekends.

• Passion for high-quality journalism, longform pieces and well-crafted stories.
• The ability to curate a selection of stories from a wide range of topics and angles.
• The ability and skill to work with other section editors and collaborate on weekend publishing.
• A solid grip on digital storytelling formats and news design.
• A thorough understanding of the South African news and political landscape.

Minimum requirements

• At least 10 years' experience as an editor or senior journalist in a South African newsroom.
• A relevant tertiary qualification.
• Experience in digital editing and publishing.
• Sound editorial knowledge, including proficiency as a writer with strong editing skills.
• A good understanding of the South African news-reading market and online habits.
