The Durban University of Technology (DUT) invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the position of Manager: Security Operations and Technical Services.
MANAGER: SECURITY OPERATIONS AND TECHNICAL SERVICES
Location: Durban / Midlands Campuses
Service Unit: Protection Services
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
To manage and oversee the daily operations, technical systems, and coordination of campus security across DUT campuses, ensuring the safety of students, staff, visitors and assets. The role integrates operational leadership with technical expertise in surveillance, access control and control room management, while ensuring compliance with security policies and continuously improving security systems.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- A relevant Degree or Postgraduate Diploma (NQF Level 7).
Experience
- A minimum of five (5) years' experience in Security Operations, including at least three (3) years at management level in security operations.
Legal Requirements
- PSIRA Registration (Grade A).
- Valid Driver’s Licence (Code B).
Special Requirements
- Must be available 24/7 for emergencies.
- Must pass regular fitness, medical and security clearance checks.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends and public holidays.

- Ability to liaise effectively with law enforcement agencies, emergency services, service providers and contractors.
Ideal / Advantageous Requirements
- Relevant qualification in Security or Risk Management (NQF Level 8).
- Seven (7) to ten (10) years' progressive experience managing security operations.
- Advanced expertise in security systems, access control and technical solutions.
- Risk management and emergency planning skills
- Stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution
- Firearm Competency Certification.
- Occupational Health and Safety Certification.
- Advanced Security Systems Integration training.
- Business Continuity and Crisis Management training.
- Investigations and Evidence Management training.
Duties
The successful candidate will be responsible for, amongst others:
- Oversee security operations across Durban and Midlands campuses.
- Ensure adequate deployment of security personnel and effective security coverage.
- Monitor and evaluate daily security reports and implement corrective actions where required.
- Implement patrol, access control and incident response measures.
- Manage central control room operations and ensure 24-hour CCTV and access control monitoring.
- Supervise control room personnel and monitor operational performance.
- Ensure compliance with incident reporting protocols and data storage requirements.
- Oversee the installation, maintenance and continuous improvement of security systems.
- Manage CCTV, alarm and access control infrastructure and ensure system functionality.
- Conduct regular risk assessments and develop emergency response protocols.
- Coordinate evacuation drills and monitor compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
- Develop campus-specific contingency and emergency response plans.
- Lead investigations into security incidents and ensure proper evidence collection and documentation.
- Liaise with SAPS, emergency services and other relevant stakeholders.
- Track security incident trends and implement preventative measures.
- Plan, coordinate and oversee close protection services for designated high-risk individuals.
- Conduct threat and vulnerability assessments and develop protection plans.
Supervise, mentor and develop security personnel. - Manage performance, training, rostering and compliance with PSIRA requirements.
- Ensure compliance with DUT security policies and procedures.
- Conduct audits, inspections and contractor compliance reviews.
- Prepare management reports and recommend continuous improvements to security operations and systems.
