A Field Guide at a 5-star game lodge in the Kruger National Park is responsible for delivering exceptional safari experiences while ensuring guest safety, wildlife conservation, and luxury hospitality standards. The role combines wildlife expertise, guiding, storytelling, conservation awareness, and guest relations.Duties and ResponsibilitiesConduct morning and afternoon game drivesLead guided bush walks and walking safaris (where qualified)Interpret wildlife behavior, birdlife, flora, fauna, and ecosystems to guestsProvide educational and engaging safari experiencesEnsure the safety and comfort of guests during all activitiesHost guests professionally and create memorable experiencesAssist with lodge hosting duties, guest check-ins, and orientationMaintain safari vehicles, radios, rifles, and guiding equipmentPerform vehicle checks, cleaning, and basic maintenanceFollow reserve rules, safety procedures, and conservation protocolsAssist with bush clearing, reserve maintenance, and veld managementReport sightings, incidents, and environmental concernsSupport anti-poaching awareness and conservation initiativesCoordinate with lodge departments regarding guest needs and schedulesAssist with transfers and other lodge operational duties when requiredMaintain accurate guiding logs, compliance records, and reportsMentor junior guides or trainees where applicableUphold the lodge’s luxury service standards and brand image

Required Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Matric
• FGASA Field Guide qualification (typically NQF Level 2 or NQF Level 4)
• DEAT / NDT / LEDET registration depending on province
• Valid South African driver’s license
• Valid PDP (Professional Driving Permit)
• Valid First Aid Certificate
• ARH (Advanced Rifle Handling) certification
• Backup Trails or Lead Trails qualification advantageous
• Firearm competency certificate advantageous
• Wilderness First Aid advantageous
• Hospitality or tourism qualifications beneficial

Experience Required

• 2–4 years’ experience in a Big 5 reserve or luxury lodge environment
• Previous experience conducting game drives and bush walks
• Experience interacting with international guests
• Knowledge of wildlife tracking and animal behavior
• Experience in luxury hospitality environments advantageous
