Job description
To perform reviews and assessments of documents submitted by authorisation holders, as assigned, based on an in-depth understanding of established legal, regulatory and organisational documents, processes and guides, in the area of Nuclear Engineering, Reactor Design and Operational Safety, Reactor Control and Accident Control and Mitigation
Minimum requirements
- NQF level 7 in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical or Nuclear Engineering
- Minimum of 3 years regulatory or industry experience
- Knowledge of the principles of and requirements for nuclear safety related to nuclear power plants design, operation, defence in depth, modification and configuration control, and accident analyses.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform reviews and assessments, based on an in-depth understanding of established legal, regulatory and organisational documents, processes and guides, of technical submissions required for new applications
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in performing reviews and assessments
- Review of submissions such as plant modifications, changes to plant classifications and nuclear procurement specifications, changes to licensing and design bases documents and changes to related processes
- Provide technical support to the audits and inspection function, with respect to issues related to plant changes, classifications, specifications, equivalencies, commercial dedications, manufacturing and procurement quality assurance
- Represent organisation in meeting with external stakeholders
- Handle both simple and complex systems reviews and assessments
- Provide input into the development of regulatory standards, guides and internal processes
- Participate in national and international forums
- Participate in other NNR work outside the department, as required e.g. emergency exercises etc.

About National Nuclear Regulator
The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is a public entity which is established and governed in terms of Section 3 of the National Nuclear Regulator Act, (Act No 47 of 1999) to provide for the protection of persons, property and the environment against nuclear damage through the establishment of safety standards and regulatory practices.

The facilities and actions regulated by the NNR are diverse and includes the operation of nuclear power reactors, research reactors, nuclear technology applications, radioactive waste management, mining and processing of radioactive ores, users of small quantities of radioactive material, transport of radioactive materials, vessels propelled by nuclear power or having radioactive material on board and to any other actions capable of causing nuclear damage to which the National Nuclear Regulator Act applies.
The NNR is primarily mandated to monitor and enforce regulatory safety standards for the achievement of safe operating conditions, prevention of nuclear accidents or mitigation of nuclear accident consequences, resulting in the protection of workers, public, property and the environment against the potential harmful effects of ionizing radiation or radioactive material.
