Purpose of Positon:
To prepare and process appropriate specimens for human paternity testing, forensic body identification and routine diagnostic tests, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification, data analysis, and troubleshooting, while ensuring accuracy, quality, and compliance with laboratory standards and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technical procedures following correct SOP’s. Handling, preparation and processing of various specimens for human profiling, forensic body identification and routine diagnostics.
- Excellent knowledge and skills of DNA extraction and PCR.
- Reading scientific literature and keeping up to date with new techniques, and literature.
- Must take ownership of all duties
- Where necessary, identify, develop and implement improvement of the laboratory procedures to meet the requirements of ISO9001 and ISO17025.
- Assist/assure that patient results are sent out within laboratory TAT.
- Applicants must have a South African ID or a valid South African work permit.
Required Skills
- Laboratory Work: 1 to 2 years
- Solid Level Of Knowledge In Genetics: 2 to 3 years
- Molecular Disciplines: 2 to 3 years
Candidate Requirements
Requirements:
· Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Scientist/Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist. B.Tech, National Diploma, BHSc, BSc, or equivalent qualification in Laboratory Technology, Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or a related scientific discipline.
· Minimum of 1–2 years’ experience in a molecular diagnostic, genetics, or forensic laboratory environment.
· Sound knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including DNA extraction, PCR amplification, and genetic analysis.
· Strong understanding of human profiling and human genetics.
· Experience or knowledge in human paternity testing and forensic body identification using DNA-based methodologies.
· Familiarity with forensic chain-of-custody procedures and accurate sample handling practices.
· Knowledge and understanding of medical ethics, confidentiality, and laboratory quality standards.
· High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment to producing quality results.
· Ability to work effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
· Strong organisational, administrative, and time-management skills.
· Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet strict turnaround times.
· Professional conduct, reliability, and punctuality.
