Our client in the Port of Cape Town is actively seeking qualified Mobile Crane Operators to operate mobile cranes in the following categories:

  • 35 Tonne
  • 80 Tonne
  • 180 Tonne
  • 220 Tonne

Role Purpose

A Mobile Crane Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of mobile cranes used to lift, move, and position heavy materials. The role includes conducting daily inspections, verifying load capacities, setting up outriggers, executing precise lifts based on signals, and carrying out routine maintenance.

Operators are accountable for safety compliance and must ensure all operations adhere to South African safety regulations, OSHA/manufacturer requirements (as applicable), and site-specific protocols.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operational Control: Safely operate crane components (truck-mounted, all-terrain, or crawler) to lift and position loads in industrial/construction/mining environments.
  • Daily Inspections & Maintenance: Perform daily, documented pre-start checks (including inspection of cables, hooks, hydraulics, and other key components).
  • Safety Adherence: Ensure strict compliance with occupational health and safety requirements, including stability checks and outriggers setup.
  • Load Assessment: Use load charts to confirm safe working loads, boom angles, and radii to prevent overloading.
  • Site Coordination: Coordinate with riggers and signal personnel to ensure balanced lifting and safe load travel paths.
  • Reporting: Immediately report malfunctions, incidents, injuries, and document all relevant operational information.

Candidate Requirements

Typical Requirements

  • Valid Code 14 Driver’s Licence (including a PrDP where required)
  • Recognised Mobile Crane Operator Certificate (capacity-specific certification may be required, especially for 120T and above or higher as per site requirements)
  • Proven experience operating mobile cranes in mining and/or high-pressure industrial/construction environments
  • Documented medical fitness for working in harsh industrial conditions and potentially at heights.
