Overall Purpose of the Job

The Inhouse Server Specialist is responsible for administering, maintaining, and optimising DUT’s Microsoft ecosystem, including Microsoft 365, Azure services, and Windows Server environments. The role ensures availability, security, and efficiency of Microsoft platforms while supporting staff and students with innovative solutions, governance, and best practices.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in information Technology, Computer Science, or related field

     (NQF Level 7).

• 3–5 years experience Microsoft systems administration and support with 3 years minimum time spent in job
• 5+ years’ experience in Microsoft environments or related server environments, with exposure to cloud migration, hybrid infrastructure, and enterprise-level deployments
• Strong knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server
• Active Directory
• Exchange Online
• Office 365 applications.

Ideal

• Honors Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science with Microsoft certifications (e.g., MCSA, MCSE, Microsoft 365 Certified: Enterprise Administrator Expert, Azure Administrator Associate)
• Microsoft Cloud-related professional certifications (Azure, Microsoft 365, Google cloud, AWS cloud)
• Azure administration, enterprise security, and compliance governance
• Advanced expertise in Azure cloud services
• PowerShell scripting, SharePoint Online
• Intune/Endpoint Manager
• Microsoft Teams administration.

Summary of Duties:

Microsoft 365 Administration and Support

• Administer and maintain Microsoft 365 tenant, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive to ensure reliable performance and service availability.
• Configure user accounts, groups, policies, and licenses in Microsoft 365 Admin Center to align with organisational requirements.
• Troubleshoot user issues in Microsoft 365 applications, ensuring minimal downtime and effective resolution.
  

Azure and Cloud Infrastructure Management

• Manage and configure Azure resources, including virtual machines, storage accounts, and networking to support business applications.
• Design and implement secure hybrid cloud environments integrating on-premises infrastructure with Azure services.
• Monitor cloud service usage, performance, and cost, producing reports to support optimisation strategies.

Windows Server and Active Directory Administration

• Manage domain controllers, DNS, DHCP, and group policies to ensure secure and efficient Active Directory environments.
• Maintain server patching schedules, updates, and security configurations to reduce system vulnerabilities.
• Perform capacity planning and performance tuning for server workloads to maintain efficiency.

Security, Compliance, and Governance

• Implement security policies, including multi-factor authentication, data loss prevention, and conditional access.
• Conduct periodic audits of Microsoft systems to ensure compliance with institutional, legal, and regulatory standards.
• Manage threat detection, response,

User Support, Training, and Collaboration Enablement

• Provide Tier 2/3 support for Microsoft-related incidents and service requests.
• Engage stakeholders to understand collaboration needs and configure Microsoft solutions accordingly.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation

• Stay current with Microsoft product roadmaps, ensuring early adoption of relevant technologies.
• Benchmark DUT’s Microsoft environment against industry standards to identify improvement opportunities.
• Propose innovative solutions to improve collaboration, teaching, and administrative efficiency.
