Our client, SAPO, is seeking to appoint an experienced and technically strong Plant Material Manager to join their team based in Stellenbosch. The ideal candidate is highly organised, goal-oriented, and able to take ownership of a complex and specialised function within plant material production and management. They should be a strong relationship builder, comfortable engaging with industry stakeholders, and able to operate both strategically and operationally while maintaining high scientific and technical standards.
Responsibilities will include (but not limited to): *Manage sourcing, storage, and distribution of plant material *Establish and maintain foundation and mother blocks *Oversee inspections to ensure quality and certification compliance (Plant SA standards) *Monitor pest, disease, and virus status of plant material *Provide technical support to growers, nurseries, and internal teams *Build and maintain stakeholder relationships locally and internationally *Represent the organisation in industry forums and committees *Drive business development and growth opportunities *Oversee evaluations, trials, and new variety development *Lead special projects and innovation initiatives *Manage team performance and development *Oversee budgets, financial reporting, and income streams *Ensure accurate reporting, risk management, and process improvement *All other tasks related to the role.
Essential qualifications, skills, and experience:
• BSc Degree in Hortology or related field;
• 5–7 years’ experience in plant improvement, plant material production, or related agricultural operations;
• Strong technical and scientific knowledge within the plant production environment;
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook);
• Good experience with database management packages;
• Valid driver’s license and own reliable transport.
