Role Overview
A leading player in the piping and water infrastructure sector is seeking a Technical & Specification Engineer to drive the adoption of advanced pressure pipe systems in South Africa.
This is a market-development engineering role, focused on influencing project specifications at the design stage. The successful candidate will work closely with consulting engineers, municipalities, contractors, and internal commercial teams to position innovative pipeline solutions in major infrastructure projects.
Key Purpose of the Role
The primary objective of this role is to secure project specifications before tender stage, ensuring the inclusion of advanced pipe systems in bulk water and infrastructure developments.
Key Responsibilities
1. Consultant & Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with consulting engineers and key decision-makers
Conduct technical presentations and CPD sessions
Provide expert guidance on pipe material selection
Support specification development during early project stages
2. Specification Development
Influence and contribute to project specifications
Develop and promote:
Design standards and guidelines
Life-cycle cost comparisons
Technical documentation and specification templates
Assist with:
Hydraulic design
Pipe class selection
Installation guidelines
3. Project Engineering Support
Provide technical support on active infrastructure projects
Perform:
Pressure class verification
Surge analysis support
Structural and installation assessments
Advise on:
Fittings and thrust block requirements
Trenching, bedding, and installation best practices
4. Technical Sales Support
Collaborate with the commercial team on:
Tender evaluations
Technical submissions
Contractor queries and product presentations
Act as the technical authority during project engagements
5. Market Intelligence & Strategy
Monitor and track upcoming infrastructure projects
Identify opportunities in:
Bulk water pipelines
Municipal reticulation
Irrigation schemes
Mining water systems
Analyse consultant preferences and industry trends
6. Internal Technical & Product Support
Provide feedback to manufacturing and product teams
Contribute to:
Technical manuals and design guides
Internal training for sales teams
Support quality investigations and product performance reviews
Candidate Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- BEng / BSc in Civil Engineering
- Professional Registration (PrEng) preferred
- 8 – 15 years’ experience in:
- Bulk water pipeline projects
- Municipal water infrastructure
- Consulting engineering environment
Technical Competencies
- Pipeline design and analysis
- Head loss calculations
- Pressure class design
- Surge analysis
Installation & Materials Knowledge
Strong understanding of:
- PVC / O-PVC
- HDPE
- Steel pipelines
- GRP systems
- Installation practices (bedding, backfill, compaction)
Communication & Influence
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills
- Ability to engage with senior consulting engineers
- Technical report writing and documentation
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Performance will be measured based on market impact:
