The Metallurgical Plant Manager is responsible for the overall management, performance, and optimisation of the gold processing plant, ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective metallurgical operations. The role focuses on maximising gold recovery, maintaining plant availability, and ensuring full compliance with South African mining regulations and company standards
Operational Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operation of the metallurgical plant (crushing, milling, CIL/CIP, elution, smelting).
- Ensure production targets are achieved in line with business objectives.
- Monitor and optimise plant throughput, recovery rates, and efficiencies.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance plant performance.
Metallurgical Optimisation
- Manage and optimise gold recovery processes and reagent consumption.
- Analyse metallurgical data and implement improvements to maximise yield and minimise losses.
- Ensure adherence to metallurgical best practices and process standards.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA).
- Drive a zero-harm safety culture within the plant environment.
- Oversee risk assessments, audits, and implementation of safety controls.
Maintenance & Asset Management
- Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure plant reliability and equipment availability.
- Oversee planned maintenance schedules and shutdowns.
- Ensure optimal utilisation of plant assets and infrastructure.
Leadership & People Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of metallurgists, supervisors, and plant personnel.
- Manage performance, training, and succession planning.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Financial & Cost Control
- Develop and manage the plant operational budget.
- Control costs related to reagents, utilities, and maintenance.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or quality.
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement
- Prepare and present production and performance reports to senior management.
- Liaise with internal departments (mining, engineering, finance) to ensure alignment.
- Engage with external stakeholders where required (auditors, regulators, suppliers).
Required Skills
- Management: 5 to 6 years
- Metallurgical Gold Operations: 8 to 9 years
Candidate Requirements
- Degree / Diploma in Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
- Minimum 8–10 years’ experience in gold processing / metallurgical operations
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a management role
- Strong knowledge of gold extraction processes (CIL/CIP, elution, smelting)
- Sound understanding of South African mining legislation (MHSA)
- Experience with plant optimisation and process improvement projects
- Exposure to ISO standards and quality management systems
- Experience in large-scale gold mining operations
