Employer: Rhodes University

Department of Biochemistry,  Microbiology and Bioinformatics

The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

Main Objectives

All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research) and community engagement, and recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels and contribute to their profession.

 The Requirements

  • At least a Master's degree in Biochemistry. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a PhD in Biochemistry. Preference will be given to candidates with a research focus in enzymology or metabolism.
  • Tutoring, facilitation, or conference presentation experience required. No teaching experience required.
  • Ability to teach in the following disciplinary areas: fundamental biochemistry principles, enzymology/metabolism.
  • No research supervision required.
  • No emerging national profile in the discipline is required.
  • A track record of administrative, management, and/or leadership roles is required, but it may be informal.

Selection Process (provisional date, subject to change):

  • Short-listing meeting scheduled for the TBC 2026
  • The selection process that will be followed for this post will include an assessment and/or presentation and an interview.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be informed of the interview date.

Remuneration per annum (Grade L):

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum:                                              R667 972

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately):                             R872 722
