The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and meticulous individual to support genetics services, perform validations (DNA barcoding) and ensure compliance with quality management systems.
This position requires a National Diploma in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Forensic Science at NQF level 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field or a Degree/Advanced Diploma or equivalent qualification at NQF level 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage.
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: training in good laboratory practice and laboratory safety, knowledge of DNA barcoding, molecular analysis processes such as DNA extraction, PCR and cycle sequencing, preferably in animals and forensics; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written at all levels), analytical skills; ability to work with a diverse team and under pressure whilst being quality and safety conscious; and advanced computer literacy. The possession of a valid driver’s license with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
- Implement DNA barcoding protocols and workflows of selected priority vertebrate taxa (Birds, Mammals and Reptiles) for species identification for forensic case work;
- Contribute to development and implementation of SOPs and technical documents for DNA barcoding including Quality Management System and validation plans;
- Attend to general laboratory and administrative duties; and
- Assist in the procurement of laboratory equipment and consumables.
