PURPOSE OF ROLE

 

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Mechanical Design Engineer / Technologist to join our Oil, Gas and Power Engineering team. This is mostly a 100% technical role, in which you will provide specialist inputs and support to ensure professional and compliant designs are produced on time and to specifications. You will be responsible for producing quality engineering outputs that satisfy all client requirements, codes and standards while adhering to internal engineering processes. This position offers the opportunity to work on challenging projects within the Oil, Gas and Power EPC/EPCM industry, with the potential to act as Technical Proposal Lead or Lead Mechanical Engineer within project teams.

 

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

New Business Development, Tenders and Proposals

  • Act as Technical Proposal/Tender Lead when appointed.
  • Develop and review User Requirement Specifications (URS) and Operational Requirement Specifications (ORS) with clients.
  • Lead concept development, feasibility checks and value engineering exercises.
  • Review technical outputs from other Mechanical Engineers and adjudicate supplier offers.
  • Develop Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) and estimate engineering effort for EPC and EPCM projects.
  • Compile technical specifications and adjudicate supplier offers.
  • Estimate engineering effort and provide input to project schedules.
  • Identify technical and commercial risks.

 

Design and Design Reviews

  • Act as Mechanical Lead within a specific project.
  • Develop and review basic and detailed designs across all project phases (Definition, Design, Implementation and Handover).
    • Ability to read and understand Process Flow Diagrams.
    • Ability to read, understand provide input to and review P&IDs.
    • Develop and Review Mechanical and Piping Design Basis Documents.
    • Develop and Review Mechanical Equipment Technical Specifications and Datasheets.
    • Select and Size Mechanical Equipment (Pumps, Compressors, Pressure Vessels, Tanks etc.).
    • Develop Piping Specifications.
    • Develop and Review Mechanical Equipment Lists.
    • Develop and Review Valve Lists.
    • Participate in Plant 3D Model Reviews.
    • Perform Constructability, Maintainability and Operability Studies.
    • Review Equipment Layout Drawings.
    • Develop Pipe Support Standards.
    • Design Special Pipe and Ducting Supports.
    • Review Piping System Designs.
    • Review Piping Isometrics.
    • Review Piping General Arrangements.
    • Participate in HAZOP, FMECA, LOPA and RAM Studies.
    • Develop Mechanical and Piping Scope of Work for sub-contractors and Technical Installation Requirements for Mechanical Equipment and Piping Systems
  • Ensure designs are technically compliant, cost-effective, procurable and constructible.
  • Apply required codes and standards effectively.
  • Oversee and review sub-contractor Mechanical designs to ensure compliance and timely delivery.
  • Address internal and external review comments.
  • Provide technical support during installation, testing and commissioning.
  • Compile and or review design change documents.
  • Perform and or review steady state hydraulic analysis of piping systems.

Design Integration

  • Interface with other engineering disciplines (Process, Electrical, C&I, Civil, Structural) to ensure integrated design delivery.
  • Participate in Integrated Design Reviews.

Site Engineering and Commissioning

  • Review and adjudicate vendor / supplier offers.
  • Attend Factory Acceptance Tests and Inspections.
  • Review and accept Factory Test Results.
  • Support installation teams by resolving technical queries and performing site inspections.
  • Review hydrostatic pressure test packages and witness testing as required.
  • Act as commissioning engineer when required, compiling procedures and recording data.
  • Support project hand-over and close-out of engineering deliverables.

Contract Negotiations

  • Participate in client technical negotiations to reach contract approval and signature.

Teamwork and Leadership

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to Engineers in Training (EITs), Junior. Engineers/Technologists and Engineers/Technologists.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer within the team.
  • Promote and support company values.

QUALIFICATION

  • Sc / B.Eng / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Equivalent
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or Professional Technologist

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 10 to 15 years relevant design engineering experience
  • At least 4 years in the Power Generation or Oil & Gas Industry within the EPC or EPCM Environment

 

COMPETENCIES

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge of the Engineering Design Life Cycle within EPC / EPCM Projects.
  • Good knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g. PER, SANS 347, ASME B31, ASME VIII, API, ASTM).
  • Good general knowledge regarding the fundamentals applicable to the selection, sizing, operation and construction of Mechanical Equipment (pumps, tanks, pressure vessels, valves).
  • Good general knowledge regarding piping systems within Power Generation and Oil & Gas Industries.
  • Knowledge of the OHS Act and its Regulations.
  • Good knowledge of ISO quality systems principles (ISO 9001, 14001, 18001).
  • Good understanding of PMBOK principles and project management procedures.
  • Technically competent within the applicable knowledge area.
  • Good understanding of the Oil, Gas and Power Generation industries.
  • Good knowledge of contract management and types of contracts (NEC, FIDIC).
  • Good knowledge and application of project delivery models (EPC, EPCM).
  • Good understanding and application of financial aspects of projects.

Skills

  • Computer literate.
    • MS Office
    • Prokon or similar (basic understanding of pipe support and equipment skid design)
    • CAESAR II or similar (advantageous),
    • NavisWorks or similar, AFT (advantageous), Themoflow (advantageous)
  • Good leadership skills
  • Able to communicate clearly with excellent verbal communication and report writing skills
  • High degree of analytical thinking
