The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing and maintaining diesel-powered vehicles and equipment within the workshop. The role ensures all machinery and fleet assets are serviced to manufacturer standards, minimising downtime and ensuring operational reliability, safety and performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance & Repairs
Perform routine servicing and preventative maintenance on diesel vehicles and equipment.
Diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults using diagnostic tools and equipment.
Repair or replace defective engine components, fuel systems, transmissions, braking systems and steering components.
Conduct engine overhauls and rebuilds where required.
Ensure all work is completed according to manufacturer specifications and workshop standards.
2. Diagnostics & Fault Finding
Use computer diagnostic systems to identify faults.
Interpret technical manuals, schematics and service bulletins.
Accurately identify root causes of mechanical failures and recommend corrective actions.
Test vehicles and equipment after repairs to ensure proper functionality.
3. Workshop Operations
Maintain a clean, organised and safe workshop environment.
Ensure tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.
Complete job cards accurately and record all parts used.
Assist with managing workshop stock levels and report parts shortages.
Adhere to daily production and repair targets.
4. Health & Safety Compliance
Comply with Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
Follow safe handling procedures for tools, oils, fuels and heavy components.
Report any safety hazards or incidents immediately
5. Quality Control
Conduct final inspections before equipment is released.
Ensure all repairs meet quality standards.
Minimise repeat repairs through accurate workmanship.
Key Performance Areas (KPAs)
Turnaround time on repairs
Quality of workmanship (minimal comebacks)
Equipment uptime and reliability
Compliance with safety standards
Accurate job card completion

Candidate Requirements
Minimum RequirementsMatric (Grade 12)
Qualified Diesel Mechanic with recognised Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal preferred)
Minimum 3–5 years’ post-trade workshop experience
Experience working on heavy commercial vehicles, earthmoving equipment or generators
Valid driver’s licence

Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems
Ability to work independently and under pressure

Physically fit and able to handle workshop demands
