Vacancy Details

A well-established SME specialising in the manufacture and repair of transformers and switchgear—serving the industrial, municipal, and mining sectors—is undergoing a strategic operational transformation.

The business is currently moving away from informal processes toward a culture of high-performance and standardisation. We are focused on:

  • Precision Planning: Moving from reactive to proactive execution.

  • Process Standardisation: Implementing and enforcing consistent work methods.

  • Accountability & Discipline: Building a culture where documentation and "First Time Right" metrics are non-negotiable.

Note: The current environment lacks formal structure and rigorous documentation. This role is central to building these systems from the ground up; it is for a builder, not just a manager.

Position Overview

The Lead Technician – Operations & Installations will take full ownership of both factory-based production and field service execution. This is a high-impact, hands-on operational leadership role—not a back-office or maintenance-only position. It requires deep technical expertise in transformer manufacturing and switchgear systems.

The role demands resilience, extreme ownership, and a results-driven mindset. While base remuneration is SME market-aligned, we operate on a "Value-Created" model. Candidates who deliver measurable improvements in performance, quality, and profitability will earn meaningful performance-linked incentives, including bonuses and profit-sharing, in addition to a 13th cheque.

Role Fit – Who You Are

The Technical Expert: A specialist with deep, proven transformer and switchgear experience.

The Field Leader: A supervisor who leads from the front, both on the factory floor and at client sites.

The End-to-End Owner: A doer who manages jobs from initial planning through to client sign-off.

The Systems Builder: Someone who enjoys enforcing standards and creating order where it is needed most.

The High Performer: Someone comfortable being measured against clear, transparent KPIs.

Ongoing Responsibilities

Lead LV/MV transformer installations, commissioning, and warranty repairs

Develop and grow the field service unit into a self-sustaining operation

Improve job turnaround times, delivery reliability, and client satisfaction

Enforce compliance with SANS standards, OH&S regulations, and COIDA

Maintain traceable and auditable technical job documentation

Represent the business professionally at client sites and during breakdown response

Key Duties by Area

1. Technical Execution

  • Supervise and perform installation of LV/MV transformers and switchgear

  • Troubleshoot and resolve breakdowns and field-based faults

  • Support FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) and site testing: Ratio, Megger, Impulse

2. Project Oversight

  • Verify and control BOM accuracy, project timelines, and job readiness

  • Maintain high standards of documentation and technical reporting

  • Ensure strict compliance with electrical codes and safety standards

3. Team Supervision

  • Lead a team of 4–6 technicians and junior supervisors

  • Enforce SOP adherence and ensure quality of team outputs

  • Provide standby and after-hours support as needed, including emergency call-outs

Required Skills

  • Iso 9001: 2 to 3 years
  • Project Scheduling: 4 to 5 years
  • Transformer Maintenance: 6 to 7 years
  • Electrical Installation: 5 to 6 years
  • Bom Management: 2 to 3 years
  • Operational Improvement: 3 to 4 years
  • Safety Audits: 3 to 4 years
  • Technical Competence: 7 to 8 years
  • Quality Control Coordination: 3 to 4 years
  • Operational And Managerial Skills: 5 to 6 years
  • Transformer Repair: 6 to 7 years
  • High-Voltage Systems: 4 to 5 years
  • Bom Calculations: 2 to 3 years

Candidate Requirements

Minimum Requirements (Non-Negotiable)

Electrical Certification & Licensing
You must be a Trade-Tested Electrician (Red Seal) with a valid 3-Phase Wireman’s Licence and be registered as an Installation Electrician with the Department of Labour.

Experience
You should have a minimum of 7 years’ hands-on experience in transformer or switchgear manufacturing or field service, and at least 5 years in a supervisory or senior technical role.

High-Voltage Competency
Demonstrated experience with HV procedures, including switching, isolation, and lockout, is required.

Technical & Administrative Skills
You must be skilled in root cause analysis (RCA), job costing, and technical documentation. Proficiency in Excel and Office 365 for operational tracking and reporting is essential.

Education
A minimum of an N4 Electrical Engineering qualification is required.

Standards & Compliance Knowledge
You must have solid working knowledge of SANS 60076, SANS 780, IEC 60076, and demonstrate compliance with SANS 10142-1, the Electrical Installation Regulations, and the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Preferred (Advantageous)

Professional Registration
A Master Installation Electrician (MIE) certification with a valid Yellow Card from the Department of Labour will be an advantage.

Formal Education
Candidates with N5–N6 Electrical Engineering qualifications or an N6 National Diploma (including Electrotechnics) will be preferred.

Specialised Knowledge
Completion of SANS 10108 and/or SANS 10123 (Papers 1 & 2), plus experience working in hazardous or specialised electrical environments, is beneficial.

Transformer & HV Certifications
ORHVS/HV switching certification, MV cable jointing, and transformer testing certifications will strengthen your application.

Sector Experience
Practical experience in municipal, mining, or industrial environments is preferred.

Process & Operations Improvement Exposure
Familiarity with Lean, Kaizen, Kanban, or Gantt-based scheduling tools is an asset.

Personal Traits We Expect

Accountability & Leadership
You take full responsibility for your work and team results. You lead from the front, enforce standards, and act decisively when safety, quality, or deadlines are at risk.

Independent & Open-Minded
You work without constant supervision, accept feedback constructively, and aim to improve systems and outcomes. You treat every colleague with respect, regardless of background or title.

Organised & Detail-Focused
You follow SOPs rigorously, document work properly, and ensure no task is left incomplete. Sloppy execution is not acceptable — precision matters.

Hands-On & Safety-First
You are physically present on the shopfloor and in the field, setting standards through action. You never tolerate unsafe or careless behaviour and lead with consistency and control.

Trustworthy & Ethical
You handle tools, vehicles, and customer property responsibly. Your integrity is reflected in your actions — not just your words.
