Job DescriptionThe Senior Guide is responsible for delivering exceptional safari and wilderness experiences while leading, mentoring, and supporting the guiding team. This role combines advanced guiding expertise, guest engagement excellence, safety leadership, and operational responsibility.The Senior Guide plays a key role in upholding the lodge’s reputation for outstanding wildlife interpretation, guest satisfaction, and professional guiding standards.Key ResponsibilitiesLead daily game drives, bush walks, and safari activities at the highest standardEnsure exceptional guest experiences through engaging storytelling, interpretation, and personalised hostingMaintain full compliance with safety protocols, reserve regulations, and guiding standardsMentor, train, and support Junior Guides and TrackersConduct regular skills assessments and provide ongoing coaching to the guiding teamManage guide schedules and assist with duty rostersOversee vehicle, equipment, and radio managementHandle guest feedback, requests, and special experiences professionallySupport conservation initiatives and ensure ethical wildlife interactionsMaintain accurate sightings records and operational reportsAct as senior authority on guiding operations when on dutyPromote teamwork, discipline, and professional conduct within the guiding department
Qualifications & Certifications
- FGASA Level 2 or higher (Level 3 preferred)
- Valid PDP / PrDP
- Advanced First Aid certification
- Rifle competency and relevant firearm licences
- Valid driver’s licence
- Valid medical certificate
- Dangerous Game qualification (advantageous)
- Minimum 3–5 years professional guiding experience
- Proven experience in luxury lodge or private game reserve operations
- Previous leadership or mentoring experience within a guiding team
- Strong track record of guest satisfaction and safety management
- Expert knowledge of wildlife, ecology, and conservation
- Outstanding communication and storytelling ability
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Excellent decision-making and crisis management abilities
- High level of professionalism and emotional intelligence
- Strong organisational and time management skills
- Physically fit with high bush competence
- Calm, confident, and authoritative presence
- Passionate about conservation and environmental education
- Highly responsible and safety-driven
- Guest-focused with a service excellence mindset
- Reliable, adaptable, and resilient in demanding environments
