PRIMARY PURPOSE

Technical Services Manager is responsible to oversee all mechanical systems and maintenance operations for Magashi Concession. This role ensures that all infrastructure, utilities, and guest service equipment are running efficiently, safely, and sustainably. The manager will lead a small technical team and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance while supporting the lodge’s operational needs in Magashi working environment.


*This position is based in Magashi

Detailed Responsibilities

1. Ensure efficient and productive management of concession staff
  • Confirm that each team member’s Key Responsibility Areas (KRAs) are clearly defined and documented;
  • Have a structured learning and development module available for team training;
  • Orient new team members with Wilderness colleagues, the staff village, and the overall Wilderness product offering
  • Leave schedules properly planned and aligned to other departments to ensure that service to camps is not compromised and that staff actually take the leave due to them each year;
  • Ensure that prompt, fair and timeous disciplinary measures are taken in the event of a problem.

2.To always offer a service to guests which exceeds their expectations
  • To set maintenance standards with the team
  • Facilitate and assist with repairs required that can impact a guest’s stay in an urgent matter
  • To continually train staff in the delivery of the maintenance standards
  • To monitor the adherence to the set standards
  • To revise existing standards continually with new and improved ideas
3. To maintain all aspects of the Magashi concession facilities and equipment
  • Planning on operational areas and execution of routine checks and maintenance in front- and back of house of the camp;
  • Align the maintenance standards and concept to the Wilderness brands and values
  • Refine the standards and constantly expand on the maintenance program
  • Carry out a planned preventative maintenance program for all plant, equipment and camp and concession buildings as established
  • Maintain all concession vehicles including game drive vehicles, camp utilities and heavy duty vehicles in accordance with maintenance programs
  • Maintain the concessions airstrips to an acceptable guest comfort level and as defined by maintenance standards
  • Ensure proper planning with operational management to minimize impact on guests during maintenance programs
4. New works and equipment
  • Ensure that all new equipment is correctly commissioned in the concession and supplied with both sufficient spares and a detailed manual and spares list
  • Manage all new works and repairs within the existing architectural and design concept of the respective camp
  • Ensure that all new works are commissioned within the correct Wilderness environmental policies and procedures framework
  • Assist with Projects and developments
5. Guest interaction and education
  • Interact with guests on an informative basis as required

 6. Manage or assist in various concession logistical operations

  • Assist in the correct waste management procedures being adhered to in the concession
  • Conduct regular checks to ensure control of pests in the concession
  • Manage the loading and offloading of concession trucks as required in accordance with the environmental and safety policies of the company
  • Assist the loading and offloading of camp trucks as required in accordance with the environmental and safety policies of the company
  • Assist in controlling and monitoring the safe transfer and transportation of any fuel around the concession ensuring no spillage and avoiding potential ecological disaster
7. To produce monthly operational information
  • Monthly Maintenance operational document to be generated;
  • To keep monthly concession staff attendance register current.
8. To ensure proper stock control procedures are in place
  • To ensure an agreed stock system is being implemented (Governing, purchasing, issuing and counting stock);
  • To count and record all stock monthly, incorporating the following details (Stock item, stock location, stock condition, stock quantity and stock value)
  • To submit the stock sheets to General Manager;
9. Hygiene and safety
  • Maintain hygiene standards in the Maintenance work areas to recognized international levels;
  • Ensure that all safety procedures are adhered to when operating all Maintenance equipment.
10. Ensure environmental awareness is paramount to all staff and the running of the camp operation
  • Ensure adherence to and awareness of the requirements in energy conservation;
  • Ensure adherence to and awareness of the requirements in water conservation;
  • Ensure adherence of all staff to the off road policy of the concession;
  • Ensure constant environmental education to all staff in motivating them to understand the part they play in conservation.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

Qualification:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field is usually required. A vocational training certificate in mechanical or electrical engineering, or other relevant field of education can be advantageous.

Experience:                    

  • 5+ years of experience working in machinery & maintenance processing or auto repair is desirable.
  • Have substantial experience of a relevant building trade.

Skills:           

  • Great physical fitness and ability to perform physical and back of the house tasks for extended long hours if needed.
  • May involve extended shifts or weekend availability based on operational needs
  • Deep knowledge in electrical, mechanical engineering, plumbing, drainage, construction, painting and decorating etc.
  • Leading a team of maintenance staff;
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and organizational skills;
  • Be able to plan, coach, delegate the teams work and willing to take a hands-on approach to the maintenance and repairs activities;
  • A major part of this role will be focused on up-skilling the team in order to reduce the number of contractors used;
  • Ability to work well under pressure and Multitasking capability.
