The function of an interpreter is to facilitate communication between hearing and D/deaf or hard of hearing individuals in classrooms and meetings using South African Sign Language serves as a liaison between D/deaf or hard of hearing students, hearing students, and instructors; and performs related work as required.

Sign Language Interpreting | - Interpret for D/deaf students to face meetings and presentations in various external settings - Interprets lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, events, and other spoken word situations using South African Sign Language or other manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of D/deaf or hard of hearing students. - Must be able to travel occasionally to any of the other campuses and extra-curricular activities such as student workshops and sports games. - Attends the workplace regularly, reports to work punctually and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the worksite. Working hours may include evenings, holidays or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events -Interpret for the staff members or parents -Support the Student Support Team with Sign Language Skills Training |
Candidate Requirements
Education | -Qualification in Translation and interpreting (Degree or Diploma) -South African Sign Language Skills |
Language | -South African Sign Language - English |
Work Experience | - At least 3-5 experience as an interpreter - Excellent communication skills and adaptability to the situation. - Previous experience in Sign Language Interpreting in formal settings. - Proven experience of working with and advocating on behalf of D/deaf community. -Proven experience of working in multi-disciplinary environments and working with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds. - Knowledge and understanding of D/deaf culture. - Flexible and positive attitude and creativity to circumvent/overcome challenges - Good computer skills - Able to work unsociable hours on occasion |
