The Printing Operator main duties are to carry out his duties. This is done mainly by ensuring the printing press is running efficiently, by carrying out the duties explained in this document, competently.
To read the work ticket carefully and note all instructions.
To ensure stereos are mounted on correct cylinders/sleeves, tape stereos down firmly and prepare with gears if required
To check against work ticket the availability of Raw Materials e.g. Film, Inks, Solvents, Catalysts etc.
To select colour sequence accordingly and help assistant load in cylinders/sleeves carefully.
Help the assistant put ink into the correct units. Prepare the ink pumps and viscosity controllers.
Ensure the gears, clutches, ducts, blades, seals and guards etc. are fitted on correctly before running.
Obtain approved colour standard from Ink Stores
Ensure the assistant has put the film on correctly.
Ensure all rollers, drum and impression rollers are clean.
Check the repeat length, step or pitch including register.
Ensure the colour is to Colour Standard when checked in the Light box. Colours must be verified on the Datacolor Spectrophotometer if required.
If printing bar codes, ensure that they are scanned with the barcode verifier and that a minimum pass of ‘C’ is achieved.
To approve each job as per the printing checklist.
Whilst on production constantly monitor print quality and print position, register, colour, ink adhesion, ink viscosity, roll tension and any other quality related aspect.
All quality checks to be recorded.
Achieve/better work ticket targets that have been set for Efficiency, Utilization (Make ready and wash up) and scrap for each every job.
Maintain cleanliness on and around the machine at all times
To check the treatment on all the rolls prior to loading them
Ensure there is sufficient ink and solvents available at the machine during each run.
To report damage of stereos to the Supervisor immediately.
To abide by all safety standards set.
Implement the company strategy objectives and targets set by managements.
Ensure adequate maintenance is done on all plant and equipment under your control to avoid breakdowns.
Execute the production plan.
Supervising the assistant in their duties relating to safety, cleanliness and maintenance of all plant and equipment
Ensure that housekeeping in the factory is maintained at a high standard
Ensure the set standards are implemented and achieved.
Ensure all statutory requirements such as OHSA,LRA are met.
Matric pass in Maths and at least 1 Technical subject.
Above not necessary if previous experience obtained, depending on level achieved.
Trade tested in Flexographic printing.
Formal on the job training with regard to the process of equipment
Must be able to communicate, read and write in English
Must aim to reach goals and targets set by Superiors
Must be able to work under pressure
Knowledge of Health and Safety Regulations
Technical background or recognized trade Apprenticeship
Must be able to work shifts and overtime when required
