Chief Operations Officer - Pretoria National Botanical Garden

SANBI offers an all-inclusive annual salary package of which 70% is basic and the balance structured by the incumbent (Salary Level 15)

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) contributes to South Africa’s sustainable development by facilitating access to biodiversity data, generating information and knowledge, building capacity, providing policy advice, as well as showcasing and conserving biodiversity in its national botanical and zoological gardens. SANBI currently operates from 14 campuses spread across eight provinces in South Africa.

This career opportunity is available to an appropriately qualified and experienced candidate. It is an executive management position of Chief Operations Officer who will be accountable to the SANBI CEO for coordinating a broad range of activities linked to technology and business operations. SANBI has a staff complement of approximately 1,100 employees.

The successful incumbent will champion the delivery of efficient and effective corporate services to the entire SANBI and its stakeholders. The incumbent will be required to travel extensively; therefore a valid code B unendorsed driver’s license will be required.

Candidate Requirements

Inherent job requirements:

  • A relevant postgraduate qualification in Business Management or any relevant qualification with a minimum of ten (10) years’ senior management experience of which five (5) years’ should have been served at executive management level.
  • Demonstrable competency in strategic planning and business development as well as advanced leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an exemplary work ethic.
  • A working knowledge of IT/business infrastructure, as well as data analysis and performance/operation metrics is a very strong recommendation.

Key responsibilities:

  • Promote and support the development of a network of national botanical and zoological gardens in South Africa.
  • Design and lead business operations and procedures, promoting sustainable growth of the organization, leading with a balanced approach to quality, risk, and cost, driving internal efficiencies and cost-effectiveness throughout the organization and building a strong cohort of future leaders.
  • This includes overseeing the following functions in SANBI: Conservation Gardens and Tourism, National Zoological Garden, Human Resources Management, Information Technology as well as Governance, Compliance, Risks, Legal and Ethics.
  • Lead the development of the Corporate Strategic Plan (CSP) and related Annual Performance Plans (APPs) and track and report on progress.
  • Promote internal and external communication, document management and sharing, ensuring cost-effective and efficient integration of corporate processes and systems, and promoting sustainable transformation within the organisation.
  • Support the integration of SANBI’s information technology and operations and build appropriate and cost-effective linkages, communications, systems, and processes in SANBI.
  • Identify, manage and mitigate risks in all technological and operational areas of SANBI.
