About The Playhouse Company

The Playhouse Company is a Public Entity established in terms of The Cultural Institutions Act. The mandate of the Company is to advance, promote and preserve the performing arts in South Africa. The Company, based in KwaZulu Natal, is a multi-venue complex housed within Tudor and Moorish style buildings. The theatres are equipped with world-class equipment that allow for the presentation of multi-cultural and diverse live theatre productions that allow the institution to realize both specific commercial objectives and developmental objectives, both derived from the Government’s broad macro and micro economic policies. The objectives of The Playhouse Company are to:

Produce,co-produce and present productions with Artistic, entertainment and educational value for diverse and ever increasing audiences

Facilitate social cohesion, diversity and inclusivity through its work.

Target diverse audiences through a pro-active marketing and customer focused approach

Inculcate an appreciation for the performing arts, developing future audiences and commissioning local content productions

Support education, training and skills development for artists, arts practitioners and staff

Work in partnership with local,national,regional,and international partners to maximize the impact of our programmes

Enhance financial viability through a balanced commercial and transformational programme

Ensure the protection of the historic landmark that is the Durban Playhouse
