Technical Manager – Commercial & Industrial Solar PV

Overview
A leading provider of end-to-end solar energy solutions is seeking a highly skilled Technical Manager to lead the technical function across commercial and industrial solar PV and hybrid energy projects. The business delivers fully integrated solutions spanning system design, financing, procurement, installation, and ongoing support, with a strong focus on performance, compliance, and long-term energy optimisation.
This role is responsible for ensuring that all systems are technically sound, compliant with South African regulations, safe, and optimised for performance and scalability. You will play a critical leadership role, supporting sales, project delivery, procurement, and operations, while driving technical excellence and continuous improvement across the organisation.
Required Skills
- Solar PV Or Renewable Energy Projects: 4 to 5 years
- Commercial And/Or Utility-Scale Solar Systems: 4 to 5 years
Candidate Requirements
- Lead, review, and approve technical designs for commercial and utility-scale solar PV and battery storage systems
- Validate system sizing, layouts, inverter configurations, battery integration, and protection schemes
- Approve single-line diagrams (SLDs), detailed drawings, and all technical documentation
- Ensure all designs are optimised for efficiency, reliability, and long-term performance
- Ensure full compliance with relevant standards, including SANS 10142-1 / 10142-2, NRS 097-2-1, and municipal/Eskom requirements
- Oversee grid connection applications and technical approval processes
- Develop, implement, and maintain internal technical standards, specifications, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Ensure all systems meet regulatory and safety requirements
- Provide technical input during feasibility studies, costing, and project planning phases
- Support Project Managers during construction and commissioning
- Conduct site inspections and resolve technical challenges or deviations
- Act as the escalation point for complex technical issues
- Approve selection of PV modules, inverters, batteries, and balance of system (BOS) components
- Maintain and manage an approved supplier and equipment list
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies based on performance, reliability, and bankability
- Oversee system commissioning, testing, and performance verification
- Review and sign off on commissioning reports, as-built drawings, and final handover documentation
- Ensure systems meet contractual and performance expectations
- Define and implement technical standards for monitoring and operations & maintenance (O&M)
- Analyse system performance data and address underperformance issues
- Support warranty claims, fault diagnosis, and failure investigations
- Drive continuous improvement in system efficiency and reliability
- Provide technical support during client engagements and proposal development
- Ensure all proposed solutions are technically viable, compliant, and aligned with client requirements
- Assist in translating technical solutions into clear, client-friendly value propositions
- Lead, mentor, and develop the technical team
- Drive quality assurance, risk management, and best practice across all projects
- Foster a culture of technical excellence and accountability

- Proven leadership and team management ability
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality and compliance
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear insights for non-technical stakeholders
- Ability to manage multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously
- Electrical Engineering qualification (NQF 4 or higher; higher qualifications advantageous)
- Qualified Master Electrician (non-negotiable)
- Professional registration as an Engineer or Technologist (advantageous)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in solar PV or renewable energy projects
- Proven experience with commercial and/or utility-scale solar systems
- Strong working knowledge of South African electrical and grid standards
- Valid driver’s license
- Authorised to sign off Certificates of Compliance (CoCs)
- Technically robust, compliant, and high-performing solar installations
- Strong alignment between engineering, sales, and project delivery teams
- Effective risk management and minimal technical issues on-site
- Continuous improvement in system performance and operational efficiency
- High-quality standards consistently maintained across all projects
