Role Purpose
The IT Infrastructure Consultant is responsible for designing and tailoring IT infrastructure architectures that support public transport technology solutions. The role interprets solution-specific infrastructure standards and designs client-specific environments that meet system requirements as well as client operational, security, and performance needs. This position requires strong expertise in virtualization, cybersecurity, disaster recovery, high availability, networking, and hybrid/cloud infrastructure within mission-critical environments.
Key Responsibilities
Solution-Based Infrastructure Design
Design infrastructure architectures aligned with defined transport system requirements such as AFC, fare management, fleet management, RTPI, and control centre systems. Translate system infrastructure standards into client-specific designs. Assess client environments and identify gaps between existing infrastructure and solution requirements. Produce High-Level Designs (HLD) and Low-Level Designs (LLD) aligned with performance, availability, scalability, security, and integration requirements.
Client Environment Assessment
Conduct infrastructure assessments of client data centres, cloud platforms, and network environments. Evaluate compute, storage, virtualization, topology, and security posture. Identify risks, dependencies, and readiness gaps. Provide recommendations and remediation plans.
Architecture and Technical Expertise
Design virtualized server environments aligned with sizing requirements. Architect hybrid or cloud deployments where required. Ensure appropriate resource sizing for CPU, memory, storage, and IOPS. Design secure network architectures including segmentation, firewalls, and secure connectivity. Define high-availability, clustering, and redundancy strategies.
Security and Compliance
Ensure infrastructure aligns with cybersecurity best practices and transport authority standards. Incorporate identity management, encryption, endpoint protection, and network security controls. Support compliance with data protection and payment security standards such as PCI-DSS. Maintain awareness of emerging security threats and technologies.
Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
Design Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity strategies aligned with RPO and RTO requirements. Implement backup, replication, and failover solutions. Ensure resilience levels for mission-critical systems. Participate in recovery testing and validation exercises.
Stakeholder and Pre-Sales Engagement
Provide infrastructure expertise during solution design and bid processes. Present architectures to technical and executive stakeholders. Support clarification of architecture requirements during implementation. Collaborate with software, implementation, and project teams.

Role Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Minimum 5 years’ experience in infrastructure architecture and design.
Proven experience designing infrastructure aligned to defined system requirements.
Experience in virtualization platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V.
Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or local cloud environments.
Strong networking knowledge including LAN/WAN, routing, switching, VPNs, and firewalls.
Experience designing high-availability and disaster recovery environments.
Strong cybersecurity knowledge.
Technical Competencies
Ability to interpret detailed system architecture requirements.
Strong solution-to-infrastructure translation capability.
Systems thinking and structured architectural design.
Strong documentation capability including HLD, LLD, and sizing documentation.
Ability to balance compliance requirements with real-world client constraints.
Excellent communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
Success Indicators
Infrastructure designs fully compliant with solution architecture standards.
Minimal implementation rework due to infrastructure misalignment.
Secure, scalable, and resilient system deployments.
Successful disaster recovery validation.
High client satisfaction and operational stability.
Special Conditions
Extensive travel within Africa.
Occasional overseas travel as required.
