Our client requires the service of an Technical Underwriter / Team Leader who will be fully accountable for the underwriting of all Commercial and Personal policies, at every stage of the policy lifecycle i.e. from quote stage to amendments to renewal of these policies and will therefore require a certain level of discretion to be considered and applied.  

Key performance areas:

  • Provide technical underwriting and rating advice and acceptance of risk to internal stakeholders across all classes of insurance business
  • Conduct competitor and market intelligence analysis on ad hoc basis
  • Provide support with referral risk, unique risk undefined or mandates
  • Interpret and process technical information
  • Remain abreast of local developments on all classes of business and advise management of changes to be made
  • Analyse profitability of multi-claimant or renewal individual policies and process corrective actions necessary on system
  • Analyse profitability with underwriting and business development manager, agree and implement actions.
  • Provide input in respect of pricing models and new cover to the management
  • Request and recommend changes to technical policy, endorsements and policy wording, underwriting manuals and underwriting rules
  • Do analysis on specific portfolios on ad hoc basis
  • Analyse trends, performance and recommend actions and process it on systems
  • Determine underwriting needs and arrange for these to be developed
  • Execute new strategic initiatives as identified by management
  • Provide support to queries in respect of existing policies – loss ratio, premium collection, increased cover add-ons, interpretation of wording and cover renewals and survey reports
  • Refer unresolved and persistent underwriting issues to management
  • Responsible for renewal recommendations, the processing thereof and the compiling of all communication to brokers and end-user clients
  • Managing the team of Underwriters (including quotations and renewals)
  • Managing and reporting on the unit’s performance
  • Communicating and interacting effectively with people at all levels
  • Ensuring compliance to contracted service levels and optimization of processes
  • Ensuring client satisfaction
  • Ensuring adherence to policies, legislative and underwriting requirements
  • Responsible for staff morale
  • Managing of external and internal relationships
  • Establishing and maintaining quality standards that drive client delight and cost efficiency
  • Delivering first time right service excellence
  • Monitoring process compliance
  • Continually reviewing and measuring team activities against targets, standards and service levels.
  • Leading and motivating staff
  • Managing, supporting and developing a team of people to ensure service delivery
  • Delivering results and meeting customer expectations

Candidate Requirements

The successful candidate must have:

  • Matric  with a COP or Insurance related  qualification 
  • Completed RE1 or RE5 will be advantageous 
  • FAIS Compliance: 60 credits Commercial Lines and 30 credits Personal Lines 
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the insurance industry
  • Computer literacy – Microsoft office & must be able to do system processing
  • Attention to detail 
  • Must have good people skills
  • Bilingual (English & Afrikaans)
