Chief Technical Assistant (Five-Year Contract)

Duties:

Technical:

  • Preparing the greenhouses fortrials;
  • Daily monitoring of tunnels, trials and feedback;
  • Creating seedlings for trial planting according to trial plans; 
  • Pruning and trellising of plants;
  • Preparing plant nutrient mixtures and recordkeeping;
  • Controlling irrigation and fertilisation according to plant species, growth cycle or trial requirements; 
  • EC and pH of fertilisation tanks of every trial / recordkeeping; 
  • Applying preventative pest control plans according to schedule and prevention / incident;
  • Collecting production data; 
  • Quality assessment and grading products; 
  • General tidiness of greenhouse terrain.

 

Administrative:

  • Keeping a record of all production processes during trials;
  • Using of pesticides; 
  • Fertiliser stocks;
  • Compiling lists for ordering supplies; 
  • Inventory of chemicals and consumer goods / equipment.

 

Supervision:

  • In consultation with line manager, organising work programmes in greenhouses. 

Required Skills

  • basic computer literacy
  • organised
  • good communication and reading skills

Candidate Requirements

Job Requirements:

  • Diploma in Agriculture or similar technical qualification;
  • Valid Code 8 driver’s licence;
  • Basic computer literacy;
  • Knowledge of production of greenhouse crops, including hydroponic production techniques;
  • Knowledge of safe application of pesticides; 
  • Good communication and reading skills (in at least Afrikaans and English);
  • Good collaboration within the context of a team; 
  • Independent;
  • Reliable;
  • Organised.

Recommendation:

  • Experience of hydropnics / horticulture / agronomy;
  • Valid Code 10 driver’s licence.
