MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE JOB

·                     Head of Department (60 employees)

•                    Availability of Rolling stock (Coaches and Locos)

•                    Cost management of Rolling stock (Undercarriages and Locos)

 

1)    Manager is directly responsible to carry out the following duties:

·                     Agreements with TFR,TE and Prasa (Service level agreements)

·                     Maintenance plan and updating

·                     Incident investigations

·                     Updates of regulations

·                     Railway safety regulator audits

·                     Rovos maintenance standard upkeep and improvements

·                     Break downs

·                     Derailments

·                     Priority project management

·                     Staff Wage negotiation with HR

·                     Manage staff requirements

·                     Staff interviews

 

2)    Manager is responsible to oversee and be accountable for the following areas of operation in the Loco Department

Accounts

·                     Wheels

·                     Locomotive cost (diesel and electric)

·                     Provisions

·                     Insurance needs - Locomotives and vehicles

·                     TE account payments and recons (this require regular meetings with TE. This is a crucial aspect. Personal relationship with them keep the wheel levels as we need. The problem is the managers at wheels KDS do not last long)

·                     Stock (coaches, tracks, electrical locomotives, Diesel locomotives, Generators)

·                     Projects

·                     Break downs

·                     Derailments

·                     In route inspections

·                     Depot accounts (Sentra Rand, Koedoespoort, Durban, Cape town, Musina)

·                     Loco department maintenance and upgrades

·                     Wages

 

 

 

3)    Staff

·                     Recruitment

·                     Production

·                     Rosters (drivers and shunters)

·                     Overtime

·                     Wages

·                     Recruitment

·                     Leave

·                     Health and safety

·                     Work allocations and job cards

·                     Issues (theft, time keeping, loitering, wages, motivation and so on)

·                     Housekeeping

·                     Training (Drivers, Assistants, Forklift, Crane, Train maintenance)

·                     Equipment management (tools, Jacks, Cranes forklift, locos and so on)

·                     Driver and assistant training and evaluations

 

4)    Coach maintenance

·                     Agreements with TFR,TE and Prasa (Service level agreements)

·                     Maintenance plan and updating

·                     Railway safety regulator audits

·                     Coach Roadworthiness

·                     Managing and organizing (staff, wheels, stock, projects, breakdown, derailments.)

·                     Pre and post inspections

·                     Component stock levels and procurement

·                     Special projects

·                     Waste management

 

5)    Diesel locos

·                     Agreements with TFR

·                     Incident investigations

·                     Updates of regulations

·                     Railway safety regulator audits

·                     Roadworthiness

·                     Rebuilds

·                     Upgrades

·                     Maintenance

·                     Managing and organizing (staff, wheels, stock, projects, breakdown, derailments.)

·                     Component stock levels and procurement

·                     Waste management

·                     Sourcing and purchasing locomotives

·                     Maintenance plan and updating

·                     Work allocation’s and job cards

 

6)    Diesel locos Musina Depot

·                     Managing and organizing (staff, stock, brake down, derailments.)

·                     Accommodation

·                     Vehicle transport

·                     Depot hire

·                     Fuel purchases and recons

·                     Locomotive requirements

·                     YQ for loco movement to and from Musina

·                     Work allocation’s and job cards

·                     Driver and route evaluation’s

 

7)    Electrical Locos

•                    Maintenance plan and updating

8)    Track maintenance

Required Skills

  • supervisory skills : 7 to 8 years
  • organising skills : 5 to 6 years
  • hands-on leader : 7 to 8 years
  • technical savvy : 10 years or more

Candidate Requirements

 

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

·                     Technical qualification and experience on Trains, diesel engines, electricity

·                     Self-motivated, self-starter, positive person

·                     Be trustworthy

·                     Available 24/7

·                     Must be able to lead and motivate

·                      Preferably live close to Rovos station (own transport a must)

·                     Willing to travel on short notice

·                     Be able and willing to make critical decisions and be liable

·                     Work constantly under pressure

·                     Computer literate (Experienced in MS Office with advanced knowledge of Excel)
