Challenging Electrical Project Engineering role for the owner’s team for a long term contract on a R2 billion Pulp & Paper plant upgrade in Richards Bay.  This large scale expansion and upgrade project is expected to run for 3-5 years.
Primary Purpose:
Manage and /or assist with Projects and to maintain the Mills Electrical and Instrument standards. Their relevance is underpinned by the specialised knowledge of the equipment and business processes in use, process control methodology and systems, technical practices and subject matter expertise.
Expected Outputs:

  • Designing, implementing and maintaining electrical improvement projects for the Mill
  • Optimisation of technical systems, people and resources ensuring effective project implementation according to predetermined availability parameters
  • Monitoring process and systems conditions and trends to improve electrical performance of the Mill
  • Manage optimisation and change projects relating to electrical upgrades
  • Engage in liaison with other stakeholders such as suppliers, direct line management, production and staff to ensure correct equipment applications

Typical Responsibility Areas:

  • Oversee business systems, processes and practices to ensure that business processes and equipment is maintained, repaired and applied optimally on a sustainable basis.
  • Advise on changes of equipment, maintenance systems, process systems and practices, methods to improve efficiency, etc.
  • Monitor equipment performance to minimise equipment failure, optimise and improve equipment performance to reduce downtime
  • Oversee equipment repair, assessment facilities and resources
  • Participate in the implementation of upgrades and projects


  • Optimised technical systems, people and resources and ensured effective project implementation
  • Improved electrical performance of the Mill
  • Managed optimisation and change projects relating to electrical upgrades
  • Engaged in liaison with stakeholders

Contract: 2 year initial contract (may have potential extensions of 3-5 years)
Location:  Richards Bay.  The incumbent will be responsible for own accommodation.

Required Skills

  • project management : 4 to 5 years
  • electrical engineering projects : 4 to 5 years
  • Specialist electrical engineering : 5 to 6 years
  • LV & MV, Electrical Motors, Drives, Starters, Instrumentation, Distribution Networks : 2 to 3 years

Candidate Requirements

Minimum Requirements: 

  • B Eng / BSc / B Tech Electrical Engineering degree
  • 5-10 years’ experience in Electrical Engineering in a specialist, supervisor or senior role with at least 2 years’ experience in LV & MV (HV advantageous), Electrical Motors, Drives & Starters, Instrumentation and Distribution Networks.
  • Experience on electrical projects on pulp & paper / industrial / power / petrochem plants
  • Previously worked as a Project Electrical Engineer
  • Project Management qualification will be advantageous
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and legislation

Required Personal Attributes:

  • Showing insight in systems management principles and systems alignment with company strategy
  • Showing the ability to scanning the discipline specific business environment to ensure best practice is applied
  • Able to represent the specialised technical department to the internal customer as well as external environment
  • Showing insight in cultural diversity, being adaptable
