Fresh Food Buyer – Cape Town


Our client has vacancy in their Merchandise Team. The successful applicant will work with the Foods & Fresh Merchandise Managers to maximise sales & profitability of the ambient food & fresh food departments.


Main Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  • Sourcing up and coming brands and the development of  own brand merchandise

  • Certify  all new products listed is being produced ethically and in line with the department strategy

  • Certify all new products has been approved by the product technologist, prior to listing

  • Mediate the most advantageous trading terms with suppliers and signing off terms with Foods Merchandise Manager

  • Implementing new range launches in stores and determining the store catalogue and the layout with the planner

  • Managing all supplier interactions relating to fresh food departments

  • Engage with marketing to promote the most successful deals and highlighting newly launched ranges

  • Administer comp shops to ensure the brand  has the most competitive pricing and is accurately priced in the market

  • Frequent store visits to attend to operational requirements of the fresh department, including layout changes, assistance with ordering and any general support

  • Supporting New Stores - Selecting the product assortment, planogram and initial ordering of the fresh food department

  • Driving market share and profitability of the category

  • Administration such as; new product listing, distressing products, price amendments and barcode amendments

  • Ensuring all online Wufoo forms are completed by the supplier for all new products and listed online

  • Collating trading terms and liaising with finance team to set up new suppliers

  • Updating cost and selling prices from suppliers once the buyer has approved price changes

  • Analysing price discrepancies on invoices and claiming credit from suppliers where appropriate

  • Assisting with monthly collection promotional deals and ensuring that the planning department receives information timeously

  • Loading all promotional deals, signing off of POS material and online collections

  • Creating monthly in-store promotions with suppliers

  • Updating monthly newness sheet and ensure planning receives information, monitor and track stock until received in stores

  • Evaluating and reporting sales data

  • Day to day buying tasks as determined by the manager


Minimum Requirements:

  • Matric - Relevant Retail Qualifications

  • Previous buying experience needed - Retail experience advantageous

  • Proven ability to deliver KPI’S

  • Extremely computer literate in Microsoft Office programs

  • Dolfin system experience beneficial

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • People orientated and team player

  • A keen interest in healthy food and nutrition

  • Numerate

  • Multi-task and be able to manage own time

  • Maintain professional supplier relationships

  • Quality and high-standard mindset

  • Clear credit and criminal history, as per our client's requirements



Salary – Negotiable, depending on experience
