WORKSHOP MANAGER

REPORTS TO: GENERAL MANAGER AND DIRECTORS

NAIROBI, KENYA

 

About The Company:

  • The East Africa’s largest and electric motor and associated equipment company is in search of a Workshop Manager. The company was founded over 30 years ago, expanded over the years to offer a large range of electro-mechanical services to the East African region.
Candidate Requirements

Experience:

  • 2+ years of previous managerial work experience in a similar position in the rewinding / rotating electrical equipment repair industry. 
  • 5+ years of previous experience working in a technical capacity with an electrical focus in the rewinding / rotating electrical equipment repair industry.
  • Some previous experience directly working with the rewinding of LV random wound induction motors essential. 
  • Previous experience of working with large HV machines rewind / repair / overhaul projects essential.
  • Previous hands-on rewinding experience, LV and/or HV desirable.

 

Qualifications

  • Degree level qualifications not essential though the ability to perform required calculations required. Industry or other relevant qualifications desirable.
  • Good command of the English language both written and spoken essential.
  • Good basic mathematical ability essential though no formal qualifications required.



Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Primary Responsibility:

Efficiently manage the most aspects of the workshop.

Each department is overseen by a departmental supervisor.

  • Assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of all workshop staff (35-40ppl) with the assistance of four departmental supervisors.
  • Work with existing management to design, implement and maintain more efficient workshop management systems and procedures with regards to task
    management, inspection & job costing, quality control and maintenance
    of company assets.
  • Liaise with the front office and oversee departmental supervisors’ daily job
    and task allocation/scheduling to ensure all work is completed on time with
    the correct priority.
  • Provide daily briefings to the GM regarding the status of
    all current and work and of any potential problems ahead of time.
  • Supervise all work in progress to ensure best possible workflow efficiency, adherence to company procedure and best practices whilst providing technical guidance and assistance where required. 

 

Secondary Responsibility:
In addition to the above, the candidate will be expected to perform additional tasks as required.

  • Provide technical expertise and a hands-on approach with regards to large and or specialised projects.
  • Occasionally liaise with customers with regards to technical questions & problems.
  • Occasionally manage site work teams when undertaking site work.

 

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

Skills

  • Excellent organizational and managerial skills with the ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Good general technical and procedural knowledge covering all aspects (electrical – rewinding, testing, mechanical) of electrical rotating machine and transformer repair.
  • Sound understanding of transformers & rotating electrical machines operating principles; SRIM, SQIM, DC machines, variable speed AC machines etc. 
  • Sound and detailed understanding of the rewinding process; best practices, material properties & their applications. LV-HV rotating machines & transformers.
  • Sound and detailed knowledge of random wound induction motor windings. Including different winding configurations and connections including the ability to interpret winding data’s and calculate relevant parameters required for data verification and/or redesign. 
  • Good knowledge of preformed (bar) windings with the ability to correctly spec coils and insulation systems for different applications.
  • Good knowledge covering all aspects of rotating machines electrical testing, both LV and HV.
  • Knowledge of transformer testing desirable.
  • Good understanding of machine causes of failure and the ability to perform root cause failure analysis including writing professional reports on the topic and prevention methods. 
  • Reasonable mechanical knowledge with respect to rotating electrical machines; including an understanding of different bearing types, nomenclature, fits and repair methods, correct application and knowledge of relevant key reliability factors.
  • Ability to interpret and take machine vibration data desirable.
  • Ability to physically take LV machine winding data’s desirable
  • Knowledge of LV SQIM specifications, nomenclature, industry standards,
    etc desirable.
  • Knowledge of VFDs, operating principles, installation and programming ability desirable.
