The Farm Cooperative, in collaboration with Wilderness, is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to take on the role of Community Farm Manager. This role involves overseeing operations at a small rural community livestock farm and abattoir business.
The ideal candidate will lead the development and implementation of a livestock breeding program aimed at enhancing the genetic quality, productivity, and resilience of livestock breeds in the community farm. This individual will play a crucial role in ensuring sustainable and ethical breeding practices while collaborating with marginalized communities impacted by climate change.
Note:
- The role falls under a separate entity working in conjunction with Wilderness.
- The Farm Cooperative shall be responsible for remunerating the successful incumbent.
- The role is based in Ward Three, Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North
- Establishing sustainable agricultural initiatives such as agroforestry systems, water harvesting, crop diversification, integrated pest management, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.
- Developing and implementing a livestock breeding program to improve the genetic quality, productivity, and resilience of livestock breeds within the community, ensuring sustainable and ethical breeding practices.
- Overseeing the management and operations of a fully operational slaughterhouse business, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, animal welfare practices, and food safety regulations.
- Developing business strategies, marketing plans, and revenue-generating opportunities to optimize the profitability and sustainability of the slaughterhouse business while maintaining ethical and sustainable practices.
- Empowering disadvantaged households with agricultural trainings, financial literacy, health and nutrition education and life developmental skills.
- Addressing issues of malnutrition and poverty with immediate interventions and long sustainable solutions.
- Acting as a liaison person between the farm and the local community, maintaining positive relationships and fostering community involvement.
- Supervising and training farm team members and volunteers.
- Maintaining equipment and infrastructure on the farm.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelors or Master's degree in Agriculture, Animal Production and Technology, Animal Science, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Proven experience of at least 10 years in sustainable agriculture, community development, and livestock management.
- Experience managing a farm or agricultural operation, including staff supervision and budget management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and educate community members.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of organic certification standards and regulations.
- Commitment to sustainable development, social impact, and ethical business practices.
- Class 4 Driver’s licence.
- Fluency in Ndebele will be an added advantage.
- Physical ability to perform farm work, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
