The Two Oceans Aquarium’s Curatorial Department is looking for a dynamic person in possession of a Tertiary Qualification who is passionate about and committed to conservation and the marine environment. The ideal candidate will be a good team player displaying the high levels of energy and enthusiasm necessary for this exciting position.
Candidate Requirements
Responsibilities include:
•The provision of exceptional animal husbandry practices to assigned exhibits. This includes fish and terrestrial animals.
•Accurate record keeping.
•The maintenance of exhibits according to set standards of excellence.
•Participation in the collection of Aquarium specimens.
•Actively participate in both field- and in-house research projects.
•Actively participate in the design of exhibits and life support systems
•Participation in assigned diving tasks.
•Responding to verbal and written public queries
Requirements:
•Tertiary qualification in Conservation- and/or Biological Sciences or a related field
•Minimum recreational dive qualification
•Able to complete commercial dive qualification ie. be medically fit and able to dive on a daily basis
•A valid, unendorsed Code B driver’s license
•Demonstration of a strong interest in and empathy for marine animals in an aquarium
•Demonstration of a working knowledge of water chemistry relating to the keeping of marine fish and invertebrates
•Able to respond quickly to changing priorities
•Able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
•Strong organisational skills and an active interest in personal skills development
•Work independently in the absence of supervision
•Enthusiastic, energetic, level-headed and be a good team player
•Solid knowledge of MS Office, particularly Excel and Word
•Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and public holidays on a roster system.
•Ability and willingness to participate in extended field trips
In addition, the following would be advantageous:
•A valid, unendorsed Code EC driver’s license
•A SAMSA skipper’s ticket with 15NM range
•A Class IV Commercial Diver supervisor qualification
•Experience working in a public aquarium
•Previous animal husbandry experience
•Experience culturing Marine algae, invertebrates and fish species
•Knowledge of marine species nutritional requirements
