The Department of Physiological Sciences teaches undergraduate and postgraduate modules on all systems of human physiology, including: the human body as a unit, organs, tissues, cells and integrative physiology in response to external or internal stressors.
We have very active research groups focussing on diseases associated with lifestyle or cellular injury, including cancer, cardio-oncology, cardio-metabolic and integrated metabolic research, clinical hemorheology, muscle research, bio-inspired drug delivery research and neurodegenerative diseases. Research models include healthy and diseased human volunteers, or samples derived from patients, small laboratory animal models simulating human pathological conditions allowing to investigate mechanisms of the adaptive responses to internal or external stressors or molecular drivers of the pathology, whole body and tissue sample analysis, and in vitro cell and molecular aspects. Duties:
● Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules in physiological sciences;
● Researching and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Research has to be in a field aligned to the research focus areas (refer to the website);
● Recruiting and supervising postgraduate students in physiological sciences;
● Establishing a research group in a field aligned to the overall research focus areas in the Department;
● Securing research funding;
● Participating in academically relevant departmental and Faculty activities, as required.
Required Skills

- A Phd In Physiological Sciences, Human Biology, Or A Similar Field
Candidate Requirements
Requirements:
● A PhD in physiological sciences, human biology, or a similar field;
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
For appointment as Lecturer:
● Proven experience or involvement in offering undergraduate physiological sciences modules at tertiary level;
● Lead or co-author publications in peer-reviewed journals in the relevant research field, commensurate with experience in at least one of the research focus areas of the Department of Physiological Sciences.
For appointment as Senior Lecturer:
• Proven and growing research record in accredited international journals, serving as senior author;
• Proven record of successful primary supervision of postgraduate students on MSc and PhD levels.
Applicants invited for interviews will be expected to present a lecture on their recent research to demonstrate their knowledge and communication skills.
Recommendations:
For appointment as Lecturer:
• Post-doctoral or appropriate academic/industrial research experience;
• Communication skills in Afrikaans and / or isiXhosa;
• Display an interest in exploring and implementing academic renewal of teaching, learning and assessment practice in physiological sciences;
• Display an interest in expanding data science approaches in physiological sciences.
For appointment as Senior Lecturer:
• A proven record of successful grant funding applications;
• Display an interest in exploring and implementing academic renewal of teaching, learning and assessment practice in physiological sciences;
• Display an interest in expanding data science approaches in physiological sciences.
