South to South (S2S) is affiliated to the Department of
Paediatrics in the Health Sciences Faculty of Stellenbosch
University near Cape Town, South Africa. S2S provides technical,
programmatic, capacity-building and systems support to various
USAID-funded organisations to accelerate access to HIV prevention,
care and treatment services for high-risk groups, such as
HIV-infected pregnant women and children. This USAID-funded
programme, part of the PEPFAR initiative to combat HIV/AIDS in
South Africa, is seeking a qualified and dedicated person to fill
this position. Please note that the position is in the programme
implementation capacity not in the research or academic
capacity.
T he position is a one-year contract, which can
be extended in future .
The appointee will be a member of a multidisciplinary technical
team that facilitates both on-site and off-site support for the
implementation, improvement and expansion of family-centred
maternal and paediatric HIV prevention, treatment and care
services. S/he will be expected to provide consistent and
high-quality technical support and mentorship to the different
programme interventions in his/her technical area at both facility
level and at regional training centres .
Duties:
- Working closely with the Clinical Advisor(s) in their
respective technical areas to provide direct technical assistance
to health care facilities supported by collaborating partners (such
assistance may include training of staff, facilitation of community
linkages, patient flow analysis, etc.);
- supporting the strengthening, development and management of
clinical systems related to HIV/AIDS service scale-up, adherence
support and referral systems;
- information management;
- contributing to quality improvement initiatives;
- serving as a resource for the development of training materials
in HIV/AIDS programming and evaluation of on-going programmes;
- providing direct support to health care providers to ensure
clinical HIV care/management is conducted according to national
guidelines and in a timely manner;
- liaising with psychosocial support and adherence programmes, as
well as community outreach programmes;
- working closely with other partners to maximise partnership
strengths and effectively collaborating to implement programme
goals;
- performing other duties and responsibilities as defined.
Requirements:
- Qualification as a Professional Nurse with Advanced Midwifery,
as well as experience in the Infant & Young Child Nutrition
(IYCN) project, a certificate in Lactation Management &
Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), Community and/or Child
Health Nursing/Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses
(IMCI);
- valid registration with the South African Nursing Council;
- at least five years' experience in nursing and/or public health
programming, with a minimum of three years' experience in HIV/AIDS
programmes at facility level;
- exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills;
- strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build
relationships in a challenging environment;
- ability to multitask and be efficient in high-pressure
situations;
- ability to absorb and synthesise a broad range of
information;
- a strong written and spoken command of English;
- a high level of proficiency in relevant computer applications,
particularly MS Office;
- willingness and availability to travel 40% of the time.
Recommendations:
- Experience in lactational support, paediatric HIV/AIDS care and
treatment with TB co-infection, community involvement and/or
Preventing Mother to Child transmission (PMTCT);
- a qualification in Nurse-initiated Management of Antiretroviral
Therapy (NIMART) with experience in initiating treatment, and
strong interest in breastfeeding promotion.
Commencement of duties: 1 April 2012 or as soon
as possible thereafter
