The Information Technology Division comprises some 105 staff
members ranging from support technicians, through system
administrators, engineers, software developers to business
analysts. The Division plans, provides and maintains
cyber-infrastructure (such as networks, central servers, identity
management, e-mail and telecommunications systems, amongst others)
and various applications, information systems and services that are
essential to the University's core academic and administrative
functions, and supports users in the effective use of information
and communications technology (ICT). Uniquely amongst South African
institutions, this Division maintains a significant, internal
software development capability .
The incumbent will work with other analysts, as well as
administrative, academic and technical role-players in analysing
requirements and writing functional specifications .
This position is ideally suited to an inquisitive self-starter,
a seeker of knowledge and intensive user of the Internet .
Duties:
- Writing functional specifications and business cases;
- working in groups and teams;
- facilitating analysis and requirements workshops;
- engaging in proactive problem solving;
- interacting with administrative, academic and technical
role-players;
- assisting with training, project management, change management
and specification reviews.
(Projects can involve multiple systems and processes with
interfaces to external and internal projects, and small to medium
risk projects.)
Requirements:
- A degree in Information Science, Computer Science or a related
field, or certification as a Professional Business Analyst;
- at least one year's practical experience as a business
analyst;
- at least three years' experience as an employee in a higher
education institution with exposure to the workings of a
university;
- proven skills in and knowledge of modelling, and analytical
tools and methodologies;
- good written and oral communication skills;
- knowledge and understanding of multiple business areas and
systems in a university environment;
- proven knowledge of information systems and technology in order
to be able to interpret technology for business users and business
needs for technologists;
- a creative, innovative approach;
- analytical skills;
- good networking ability;
- demonstrated insight into the uses of the Internet.
Recommendation: A qualification in Project
Management.
