Job Details
Employer: Process Engineering, Stellenbosch University

Several opportunities for postgraduate research in the development of biorefineries for the paper and pulp industry are available at Process Engineering, Stellenbosch University. These research positions for postgraduate students at Masters and PhD level deal with the development of process technologies to valourise residues/wastes from the existing paper and pulp industry.  Thermochemical, catalytic and biochemical conversion processes are applied to produce chemical and energy (fuel) products from residues such as forestry wastes and spent liquors after pulping. Experimental research work is conducted at bench- and pilot-scale, to ensure technical maturity relevant to industrial practise. Simulations and techno-economic studies are combined with experimental results, to demonstrate the viability of process technologies for industrial implementation.

The research work falls within the Bioresource Engineering theme of the Department of Process Engineering, and is closely aligned with and supported by industrial collaborations. These positions also offer postgraduate students significant exposure to the paper and pulp industry, including networking aspects that may lead to future job opportunities. The research group also collaborates nationally and internationally with other groups having similar research expertise.

Candidate Requirements

The minimum requirements for these positions are candidates with previous qualifications in Chemical Engineering, specifically B.Eng, BScEng, MScEng, MEng and MTech degrees. Candidates with B.Tech qualifications will not be considered for these positions.

Previous academic performance, as demonstrated by a complete transcript, will be taken into consideration in assessing the suitability of candidates for postgraduate studies. Previous experience with experimental work, operation of industrial facilities and/or process simulations will be considered an advantage for these positions.

Preference will be given to South African citizens and permanent residents.
