A Private Education Provider is seeking to employ an Academic Advisor in Film and Photography at their Head Office in Pinetown.



The main role of the Academic Advisor is an active rather than a passive one which includes the following:

Help students define and develop realistic educational career plans through schedule planning for each semester, if appropriate. Each student should have an up-to-date academic schedule plan from registering to graduation stage.


Monitor progress toward educational/career goals and at least once each semester review the progress toward completing the proposed academic program and to discuss grades and other performance indicators.


Follow-up with students on any report of unsatisfactory work (notice of failing grades)


Maintain an up-to-date Advising Portfolio, with a summary record of performance to date (grade reports, transcript, requirements completed, weekly reports etc.)


Inform and, if necessary, refer students to other institutional resources when academic, attitudinal, attendance, or other personal problems require intervention by other professionals


Consult regularly with faculty colleagues in order to have up-to-date information.( Learn about the colleges operations and standards)



1. Measure student success         

Perform and interpret successful performance audits.

Assessment of academic advising method with regards to student understanding of academic theories and concept

Measure student effort in achieving and attaining educational goals.

Monitor and accurately document student progress toward meeting their goals.


2. Academic Advising Role

Prepare and plan for advising sessions

Schedule advising sessions with students

Disseminate information on academic curriculum and college policies and procedures.

Provide educational guidance and assistance for students.

Deliver a passion and desire for learning.

Empower students to take responsibility for their academic success.

Maintain confidentiality regarding student educational record.

Encourage and guide student as they define and develop realistic goals.

Compile report on weekly activities

Provide students with information about academic research and strategies for utilizing the available resources and services on campuses.


4. Academic Planning

Assist students with academic and future career planning

Encourage and support the student as he/she gains the skills to develop clear and attainable educational plans.

Stay informed of current and changing rules, regulations and program requirements.

Create and maintain an interactive environment encouraging mutual trust and open communication.


Candidate Requirements


Degree in related field - Film and Photography

Knowledge of both academic and practical aspects of Academic Advising would be an added advantage;

MS  Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint experience;

Motivation - Self-motivated and motivating others;

Demonstrate own initiative in delivery of tasks;

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;

Planning - Ability to manage the resource timesheets and administrative issues;

Collaborative - Establishes good working relationships with colleagues and customers;

Attention to detail - Ensures that responses to queries and problems are complete and accurate.



Knowledge of academic disciplines, requirements, policies and options

Demonstration of ethical advising practice

Communication skills

Interpersonal skills

Effective use of career resources

Familiarity with the advising profession

Interest in student welfare
