Stress isn’t always a bad thing; we often need a bit of stress to achieve great things or accomplish our goals. However, when the stress is overwhelming and has the potential to lead you to a breakdown, that’s when you know it’s time for better stress management.

Control your surroundings
Learn to identify what stresses you out – before and after work. If you end up in traffic for over an hour every morning, perhaps consider a different route or try to leave earlier to avoid congestion. The same goes for your work environment – if you don’t enjoy being around certain colleagues, don’t spend lots of time with them.

Prioritise
Make a to-do list of your tasks that have to be done by the end of the day. Tackle those first and leave the ones that can wait for a later stage.

It’s okay to say no
If you know that you can’t take on any more responsibilities, don’t. Biting off more than you can chew is a sure way to choke.

Let it out
If you aren’t happy about something whether it’s work related or personal, you should communicate them. Speak to your manager or HR about the situation; if you don’t you’ll end up with built up feelings of resentment.

Live healthy
Make time to exercise; it releases endorphins that make you feel good and energised. It’s also a great way to work through your daily stresses. Eating a well-balanced diet also helps. Not only will you keep your energy levels up, your mind will be more focused to tackle the tasks ahead.

Take a break
Get away from your desk and step outside for a bit. You’ll feel refreshed and will have better concentration levels.

Get rid of distractions
Online chat groups and social media waste a lot of time that you could be spending on work. Emails can also be very distracting so set times to check emails and stick to it.

Sleep does wonders
Make sure you get enough sleep, about seven to eight hours will do. If you don’t get the right amount of sleep you’ll feel low on energy and your work could suffer.

Take time off
A few days off could be just what the doctor ordered. A holiday doesn’t have to involve going away to a far away land; simply going for a massage or relaxing at home could do wonders.
